This Friday, July 3rd Tune in to The Anthony McCarthy Show Hour 2 - on WEAA 88.9FM
Guest: Tom Kiefaber
Topic: What's next for The Historic Senator Theatre?
Tom Kiefaber and his family have owned and operated Baltimore's renowned Senator Theatre throughout its illustrious 70 year history. When the recent economic downturn derailed The Senator Theatre's transition to not-for-profit ownership and operation, Baltimore City stepped in and purchased The Senator's defaulted commercial loan. An increasingly controversial foreclosure auction is scheduled for July 21st, when The Senator will be sold to the highest bidder, possibly one of the churches that have expressed interest in owning and operating the iconic landmark theatre.
Tom Kiefaber joins Anthony in the second hour to discuss his historic theatre's uncertain fate, and rising community concerns that, unlike in the movies, this cliffhanger may not have a storybook ending.

The Restoration
The basis for this stunning new restoration was a 35mm print created in 1962 from the original camera negative; while the print itself was in good physical condition, the source material from which it was made was extremely battered. Due to the extensive printing and handling it had received over its lifetime, many shots were already starting to shrink and wrap, and there were numerous scratches, dust, and dirt in the damaged negative. Scanned at 4k resolution, that 47-year-old print has been meticulously cleaned both digitally and by hand, complete with a new seamless soundtrack.
This essential restoration has been made possible by the Academy Film Archive, the National Film Center of the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, and Kadokawa Pictures, Inc., with funding provided by Kadokawa Cultural Promotion Foundation and Martin Scorsese's Film Foundation.

Baltimore Theater Faces Foreclosure By Margaret Foster | Online Only | Mar. 18, 2009
It looks like no one will rescue The Senator Theatre this time.
A bank announced this month that it will foreclose on the 1939 Art Deco landmark. The last movie was screened there on Sunday.
"It's a cliffhanger, kind of like in the movies," says owner Tom Kiefaber, who won a National Main Street Award for Business Leadership in 2003. "With all the negetivity and sorrow and grief over the cessation of first-run films, I feel more strongly than ever that The Senator has a viable and economically stable future ahead of it."
