What are biobased plastics?
Biobased plastics are obtained from renewable raw materials. Typical raw materials are corn, potatoes, sugar cane or wood.
How do bioplastics and biobased plastics differ in their terminology?
The term 'bioplastics' describes both biobased plastics and biodegradable plastics. Only the term 'biobased' describes the use of renewable raw materials.
Are biobased plastic products biodegradable?
The characteristic of ‘biobased’ plastics does not automatically indicate the biodegradability of a product. Biobased products are divided into ‘biodegradable’ and ‘durable’ plastics.
What does biodegradable mean?
Biodegradable means that the material degrades naturally within a manageable period of time through a biological process.
This is more precisely specified in the standard for compostability EN 13432 or EN 14995. Here, products can be tested for their compostability following clear specifications.
How much BIO must be in a biobased end product?
Currently, there are no exact specifications. There are certification systems that specify the percentage of biobased carbon in the material.
Is the farmland used for the production of biobased plastics in competition with the farmland used for the production of food?
No. In 2017, less than 0.1 % of the world's available agricultural land was used for the cultivation of raw materials for the production of biobased end products. Even with significant growth in biobased plastics, there will be no serious competition.
How environmentally friendly is the production and use of biobased plastics?
There are now several life cycle assessments in which the environmental effects of different biobased plastics are analysed in relation to each other and in comparison with conventional plastics. Overall, the results are complex and have to be considered and evaluated in characterisation categories. Biobased plastics, for example, have considerable ecological advantages in individual characterisation categories, but also show enormous optimisation potential in other categories.
Is biobased plastic more environmentally friendly than petroleum-based plastic?
Through the use of biobased, i.e. renewable raw materials, the limited oil reserves are considerably conserved and CO2 emissions are also reduced compared to the average use of petroleum-based raw materials. However, it remains difficult to make a general statement. One should therefore always make product-related comparisons.
How does the disposal of biobased plastics by composting work?
In nature, the biodegradable plastic degrades very slowly depending on the thickness of the parts and the climatic conditions. For industrial composting, certain standard conditions according to EN 13432 must be met in order to achieve the appropriate degradation of the product.
So far, the biobased plastics Bio PE and Bio PET can be recycled in the same way as conventional PE and PET from fossil raw materials. The recycling of these innovative, biobased plastics is currently still under development. In Germany, however, there is already a recycling company that can distinguish and recycle the PLA waste collected by the ‘dual system’ from other materials.
In general, it ccould be said that plastic is better than its reputation!

The use of organic plastics can help to reduce CO2 emissions and thus conserve finite resources.
What bio material do we use?
We use a biobased material made of PLA for our organic products. Our PLA is made from sugar cane. It is one of the most efficient raw materials for PLA production.
Which models are currently available in biobased plastic?
The classic Nature Plus has proven itself on the market for several years and was one of the first in this sector.
Why aren't there more biobased writing instruments from senator® so far?
We are constantly working on the development of more biobased writing instruments for our range. Since ABS and PLA have different characteristics, they cannot simply be substituted 1:1. We have to adapt the processes to the PLA and this involves several development steps to produce high quality senator® writing instruments in PLA as well.
Why can't the writing instruments be made of 100% renewable raw materials?
The development of biobased plastics has not yet been completed and further alternatives should be available in the future. Currently, not all raw materials required for production can be produced from a renewable resource.
Why can slight surface deviations be visible?
The surface of our bio-plastic products may show slight irregularities because bio-plastics in the form required for writing instruments do not yet offer 1:1 the same mechanical properties as classic plastics. Minor scratches, inclusions or colour deviations are unavoidable (and do not constitute grounds for complaint). They rather support the character of a natural product.
How does senator® produce its organic products?
It is produced in Groß-Bieberau, in southern Hesse/Germany. The entire production is operated with green electricity and is set up according to processes of the environmental standard 14001.
Our used bioplastics are industrially compostable according to EN13432. However, this refers to the use of the material for packaging, i.e. in film thickness. Industrial composting is not possible with ball pens. Disposal can simply be done with household waste.
How should biobased plastic writing instruments be disposed of?
The product can be disposed of safely with normal household waste. The biobased plastic component is not important here and is either recycled or used to generate energy. As there is currently no general regulation on the recycling of bioplastics, we consider professional thermal utilisation to be the most sensible solution.
Ceramic is made of natural components which behave differently during production, especially when firing at high temperatures. A 100 % accuracy - as with plastic products - cannot be given in any ceramic production.
We work with target tolerances in height and diameter of +/- 1.0 mm, therefore complaints of < 2 mm cannot be accepted.
The goods delivered by us may have production-specific surface deviations. These deviations, e. g. minimal colour variations of the glaze, pinholes and glaze impurities, do not constitute a general valid reason for complaint. In practice, 1 - 2 pinholes < 1mm diameter per mug are therefore no reason for complaint.
Generally, orders are 1:1 repeatable. Exceptions are colours that are no longer available or changes to the branding area. 100 % precise repeat productions are not possible despite all parameters and standards. Due to the continuous batch change it is not possible to guarantee a perfect match.
It is essential that we be informed that an order is a follow-up order. Without the presentation of samples from previous production, complaints due to deviations from previous editions are excluded.
Most of our finishes are dishwasher-safe according to DIN 12875 >125 rinsing cycles, ceramic colours far beyond that. However, the durability of the colours cannot be guaranteed for every case due to different machine types, water hardness and detergents.
Organic colours (Polylux) and coatings (Colour 4 U Polylux) as well as special finishes (e. g. gold and silver) are generally suitable for hand washing and are not scratch-resistant. The same applies to our metal mugs. The durability of the colours is sufficient for a number of rinsing cycles, but is absolutely unpredictable due to the different machine types, water hardness, detergents etc. Therefore, it is not possible to guarantee the quality of the rinsing process.
In principle, complaints regarding the durability of printing from 12 months after delivery can no longer be accepted.
Our articles are matched to our finishing processes/machines. Therefore, we cannot assume any warranty or guarantee for externally branded goods.
Glossy Impression Print can only be offered for glass.
Optical bend: Shapes such as circles, triangles, etc. can warp on conical mugs. In these cases, we strongly recommend to produce a sample for approval.
Ceramic colours are not produced according to Pantone or HKS scales. They can only be adapted to these.
Please note that when printing with ceramic ink, slight colour deviations to the desired shade may occur due to raw material-dependent and production-related fluctuations. This is to be considered in particular with repeat orders.
The glossy edge, which can only be seen with Polylux label printing, results from the protective varnish and cannot be bypassed. It is especially important to inform us of the previous order when placing a repeat order as the protective coating is applied manually and this can result in minimal differences.
Due to its limited scratch resistance, Polylux is not printed on plates and slight damage to the surface would cause wash-outs in the dishwasher.
On C4U we print only with Polylux, both direct and label printing.
On stainless steel, only Polylux or UV print is possible.
Logo Attachment – Accuracy
We label with highest accuracy and visual inspection. However, the starting point for applying the logo is the drinking rim. If this is not 100 % straight, the logo can appear slightly crooked. We therefore ask you to note that due to the material tolerances in combination with manual labelling, a 100 % horizontal logo is not possible. Also in Direct Print, the mugs are taken up to the drinking rim, thus minimum tolerances might occur here as well.
Deviations of the logo from the edge < 1mm can therefore not be accepted as a valid reason for complaint.
Individual Names on Mugs
In principle, individual names must always be single-line, in one font and one font size (based on the longest name).
Transfer Print: Individual names are not possible within the designs. The names are printed and labelled separately and could therefore be slightly inaccurate to the main design. Labelling on the inside or on the handle is possible but can only be applied to white mugs.
Sublimation: Individual names are possible within the design, as the labels are created in digital printing. Restriction: Can only be applied to straight mugs.
Laser engraving: Due to the engraving direction of the laser, it is only possible in a vertical position and on stainless steel.
Our products are subject to European standards. The products are intended for the EU. Conformity for exports to third countries are to be checked individually. Senator will not bear any costs incurred for this. We can of course carry out laboratory tests with external service providers against payment.
